:: A Christmas Past ::

I was listening to morning radio in the car on the way to the V.A. with The Honey--

They mentioned that tomorrow—you could call in and talk about your favorite toy you got for Christmas as a child.

I remembered this Barbie “Country Living House” …

I remembered opening it—My mom had it wrapped in a garbage bag. It was way in the back behind the tree with a BIG RED BOW on top.

I remembered sitting in the floor and putting the furniture together with my Mom.

I remembered putting the stickers on the furniture depicting ‘place settings’ and putting the stickers on the couch and chair.

I remembered my Barbies…

Making new and improved furniture from styro-foam wrapped in oil cloth- sewing pins like upholstery tacks…with my Granny.

I remembered making a LAMP out of a wooden thread spool and a cap off a hair spray can.  :)

…THEN…

I remembered --- that same house. at one time. was in the VERY ATTIC of this house in which I CURRENTLY AM LIVING!!!

I don’t even know if it’s still up there.  Many years have passed since seeing Barbie’s “Country Living House”

That is so crazy--

Anyway—it brings me to this---

front of the house

I’ve been playing around a little bit with this house.

I took a trip to the Dollar Tree recently.

And I’ve been working on a new floor, in the upstairs bedroom. Along with a few other things.

I remembered why I like playing with this little house.—because of Barbie and my MOM.

Do you have a favorite toy from when you were a child?

Maybe it wasn’t a Christmas present- maybe it was for a birthday or for no reason in particular.

Better yet—Do you know what’s in your attic?

Anyone?

Maybe it’s time we get up there and take a look around…

Til next time, Be Blessed!

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, [and] being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. ~ Philippians 2: 5-8

I want to know if you find it!!! I had the Barbie Dream House with the elevator. :) But my favorite Christmas gift would have to be Mrs. Beasley. I so wish I still had her. Any year that I got a new doll is my favorite. :) I got a Baby Alive one year, and a doll that crawled, don't remember her name and a doll that walked. She was wearing a red coat. I loved dolls!

In my attic-- three boxes of baby clothes. I couldn't part with the cutest stuff. And an old TV antenna that was there when we moved in. Hmm... Favorite toy? I'd have to think about that. Had a "Baby First Steps" that was kinda fun although she fell over a lot. Liked the old craft kits. Had a macrame one. Who remembers Shaker Makers?? By the way that Barbie house is pretty cool. I still have my Barbie dune buggy and camper set.

Lovely memories! I hope your barbie house is still in the attic and in good condition. I remember that we were not allowed to have Barbies because they had breasts! Isn't that funny? I'm sure our parents were trying to preserve a little of our innocence, but they didn't think about the real people we saw everyday with real breasts! LOL!
Merry Christmas!

When I was five, my mom and I passed a toy store, in South Chicago, every day when she walked me to day care, and home again. We didn't have much money, and both my parents had to work. We didn't have a car until I was ten, so we walked or took the street car everywhere.

Every day that we passed that toy store window, and I saw a big, beautiful baby doll. It was so big that it could wear baby clothes. I wanted Santa to bring me that doll, so badly!
Later, I found out that it cost the equivalent of my parent's weekly take home pay.

Imagine my joy when, on Christmas morning, that doll was under the Christmas tree! Many years later, I learned that my mother made an arrangement with the store owner, that she could pay a dollar a week on that doll. What a sacrifice for a little girl who dreamed of that doll. My mother told me that it was the only thing I ever asked for, and she wanted to make my dream come true.

Decades later, that doll is still in my possession, and it is a constant reminder of how hard my parents worked and how special they wanted Christmas to be, for their two children. They were children of the depression, and their Christmas' were very meager. It was important that their children had Christmas memories that would always be special. They certainly succeeded in that endeavor!

Great post Patricia! :)
nice floor, but as I was reading and looking at the pictures, (and seeing your popular posts on your sidebar) I'm wondering why you didn't use your own faux wood paper technique? lol
I honestly remember so little of my childhood. I don't have fond memories. I'm sure if I think really hard for a long time, I may think of a favorite gift.
I don't have anything in the attic, but the basement is FULL of jamie's memories. I hope that someday if she were asked this question, she'd be able to answer it with a fond memory of me, like you felt with your mom

That is a very special memory and story. It makes me think of an Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Story!

First of all there is nothing but insulation and a hornets nest in my attic.:) And my favourite toy when I was a girl was my Barbie doll. I learned to sew because of Barbie. I made many tube dresses for her.

This was a great post, Pat. I loved hearing about you and your mom working on that Barbie house together. And now you get to do it again with your little house! A favorite toy?? Hmmmm. I was always a doll girl, so I will go with my Thumbelina doll. She had a soft body and a wheel on her back that when you turned it her head would move. Ann
