:: A Screen Door Sandwich ::

I was thinking on Saturday as I was painting the back screen door... it was like "putting lipstick on a pig"...but now that it is done, it doesn't look too bad and I'm grateful to have the screen door back up and in place.

  My next thoughts were, I'm thankful to have a screen door AND a house. Because...we had some pretty high winds and tornadoes come through in the Spring this year...and that is what took the door off to begin with!

Yesterday, I took the screen door off the front of the house and started getting it ready for new screen...
apparently, our dogs have us trained. When they knock or scratch...or bang on the front door...WE being the good Pup-parents that we are, get up and let them inside the house.  
They've (mainly Trouble) absolutely killed the screen door.


Originally, I ramped up my screen doors appearance from standard $20 door from Lowes...and made it look pretty good.

Today, due to 2 pretty SMART dogs and their abilities to get things done (ie: get the door answered) 

I came up with this solution. I cut 2 plywood panels for the lower portion of the door, nailed them on and applied caulk to fill any gaps---because apparently I cut them a smidgen out of square! 

Here it is tonight after I primed the panels... they still need a top coat. I think I'll be adding some right angle pieces to that small section too. 

But, for now, it is a vast improvement!  

I also paneled the inside...because well, you can see by the finger prints and smudges all over the glass door...that little people walk and sometimes run through that door. 

Oh yes! sometimes at a high rate of 2 legged speed too!!! 

So that lower right corner takes a beating...from eager dogs wanting in the house or excited children running away from other More-excited children...

Ah... and that little bit of 1/4 inch ply wood panel on the front and inside of my screen door sandwich...makes this door SLAM!  with a much weightier sound to it. 

Almost like it is the much pricier version...instead of the cheap one. :)

Two of my most favorite sounds in the universe...

THE SHRILL LAUGHTER of a child...grinning ear to ear; and the screen door slamming!

Screen Door weather~

We’ve been needing a new screen door.  The one we had was cut too small (odd thing is it fits the back door pretty well…more on that later) and it allowed insects to get into the house.
During the summer—that wasn’t a problem; because it was so hot we had the A/C on most of the time.  But since we’ve been having cooler temps and nice days like today—the high temp today was about 76° with a slight breeze out of the south!  Mmmm…screen door weather!

We bought the screen door (pictured above) at Lowes it was about $20. bucks.  I liked a lot of the others I saw—but some were just too plain fancy for my little farm house. I wanted something simple.

This one was about $88.00 and it was called the Columbia…well, whatever; it said ‘farm house’ too me.   
It got my wheels to turning.

So I grabbed some tools; a hammer, nails, and trusty Gorilla Glue

 …and some little drop off pieces, saved from another project.  Don’t ask me which one…cause I don’t remember.  I don’t even know why I saved them… but I did. 
Do you do that? Please tell me I’m not the only one…

I took each little ‘triangle’ and drilled a small hole in the corners, ran a bead of glue down two edges and nailed them onto my screen. Looks good, huh?

Today… it was nice enough to paint it.  So much better!   So, I paid roughly $20 bucks and got a screen door that SOMEWHAT resembles and $88 dollar one. (I already had everything else) …Saved about $68 bucks!  It was just a little work. 
The most time was spent painting! 
Not too bad.  I’m happy with it!  Oh yeah, and let’s not forget the money I’m saving with my electric bill…having the windows and doors opened up allowing the breeze to cool the house…
