Saving Strawberries- and Junk from a Junk Pile!

We've been seeing the temps climb the last week or so...for a couple of days we had a break from the heat and even some over night lows in the 50's ...that is unusual for this time of year.
Today we were in the mid 90's...but it FELT LIKE 100°  YIKES!!!!! I never knew. I don't know how that works...I thought if it felt like 100° then surely it MUST BE!

So anyway... when it gets warm and it looks like plants are starting to wilt or shrivel or whatever it is plants do...my husband starts watering.
Now, don't get me wrong-- I know I'm a beginner. But I told him..."strawberries need good drainage"
I SHOULD HAVE SAID : "Don't water the Strawberries-PERIOD."

So here they are looking all nice and healthy. In my momma's wash pot.

And this wheelbarrow that I got from my daughter's new place... yes, there is a pile of junk, that needs a home! This rusty old wheel barrow caught my eye.  Not so much the camera's fault. I was so happy to see it, I didn't let the camera focus and just started snapping... hence, a VERY BLURRY PHOTO!

These are the pitiful OVER WATERED Strawberries.
He meant well.
So after some research about strawberries and seeing that
  • ...they like lots of sun.
  • They like to dry out between  long drinks of water...
  • and they like good drainage.

Something I tried to simulate in the wash tub, by placing a basket on the inside to keep them out of the water, but it didn't work.
This wheel barrow is perfect.
It has some of my favorite attributes for being in the garden.
  • It is one of my favorite colors, YELLOW.
  •  It is rusty.
  • It has HOLES in it.

...and it sits pretty far from the water hose!
I'll have to see that I water it with rain water from a bucket .
I'll also be sure and take some pictures with better lighting. These were taken today at dusk-- I left them sitting in the shade to dry out a little and after being at the daughter's house for a few hours, I came home and got them transplanted. I wanted to show them to  you!

I've watched a couple of videos and am hopeful that these strawberries will live to see another day. I've got a good root ball on each of three plants and enough plant that it will get sun light and air to the roots.
They aren't much to look at right now. But hopefully I'll have a healthy plant by the end of growing season.

If not... I've got a pretty good wheel barrow ...slightly used with a few holes, I'm sure I could put to use around the yard!

Pat, thanks so much for coming back by Quirky Vistas and giving me such encouragement! You are so sweet. We can be wordy together...I love meeting up with someone else who understands the need for words sometimes. I'm in love with your wheel barrow planter. I have had my eye out for a wheel barrow to do this for sometime but I keep only finding plastic ones. One time a while back I came upon a perfect one but couldn't get in the car, and had to let it go. I can't wait to see your harvest!

who knew, I just assume your water everything! Will be interesting to see if you can bring them back to life...They look like goners to me, but like you said you still have a great rusty wheelbarrow

Oh dear, I sure hope your strawberries make it. What a great idea to put them in the wheelbarrow. I have an old wooden wagon that I'd like to plant something in.

I hear ya. I hear ya! Never have grown the berries of straw, but I truly believe they must be needing special care, thus me not growing them. You will make them survive! I have faith in you! Love that wheelbarrow. SOMETHING's gotta grow in it! You said it had some holes - how about putting some rocks along the bottom to hold and also drain the water - really I don't know anything, but that's what I would do before planting something in there. Gardening is a mystery to me! I'm sure I would never try strawberries. But some people have the magic. Good! luck with yours! There are tons of things to do with the wheelbarrow if the strawberries don't work out!
