::Chicken Behavior and The NUGGETS are LAYING!!::

This summer has been all together different than last summer. Last year we had an Onslaught of grasshoppers, high temperatures and NO RAIN. This year, the chickens have eaten the few grasshoppers we've had, the temperatures have been much milder and we've had a good amount of rain in fact the Lake Level is almost normal, for this time of year ...that is WONDERFUL NEWS.

But as to chicken behavior well, that is another story! We've had broody chickens. George our Rooster has "GIVEN CHASE" a couple of times out in the yard, when I'm least aware!
If he isn't careful He'll be getting a MANDATORY INVITE TO DINNER!

I've been hoping, since The Nuggets have had a stay of execution (because of course, they are proficient if not excellent Grasshopper Hunters), that they would begin laying soon. After-all, I've had my NUGGETS for about the same time as  Elaine at Sunny Simple Life has had her chickens, yes, we got them about the same time;  AND her chickens have already started laying!

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when, the other day The Honey says...come outside and look what I found~
...a small clutch of eggs. Not to be confused with a clutch of small eggs. More on that in a bit.

He found them in here. Well, that explains why we aren't getting but just 2 eggs a day in the coop! They're too big to be NUGGET eggs.  Hhmmph!
I knew there was a chicken conspiracy going on.

You can read about my Cracked pots here.

He saw Audrey Chicken laying in there... so disappointed.  It figures she is the culprit.
She's a bad chicken. Here she is in the Mudroom.
...Again, in the Mudroom! (yes, on more than one occasion)
On the front porch...NOT where she should be!
...and in the Corner! Where all bad  naughty chickens go to be punished! ;)

Ok, so back to The Nuggets...

There getting big enough to do one of two things.
  1. Be Eaten OR
  2. Start laying!

So then my daughter comes by to drop off the boys...and she finds this. A small egg.
Finally! a little bitty egg! This was on Thursday around lunch time.
Today, I go into town and come home and The Honey again has discovered the jackpot.
And yes! there are SMALL EGGS IN THIS CLUTCH

Small eggs and larger eggs. Not Audrey's though. This time it is Gracie Chicken laying in here.

They are well hidden underneath the blackberry bush.

One dozen in all! A mixed lot different sizes. But a clutch of small eggs is included.
Yay!

I love having chickens! They're so much fun!

Oh man....I am so a city raised girl...love the country, but don't really know it....I am assuming that this means the new chickens have the little eggs and that they will get to having big eggs. But, should they be laying in the pot??
Cute pic of chickens in the corner!

Hi Pat.. I might have told you before how
I'm at war with my HoA over my not being
allowed to have chickens.. it's in the line
of organic food but they don't want to hear
it.. all I want is the eggs. It's the only
protein I get outside of beans and some other
foods since I'm a veggie...
Being a city girl also I had no idea the
hens each have different size eggs? I thought
they came from one chicken... who knew..lol
Your comment on security, I fly maybe 3 or 4
times a year and always bring crochet, but this
will be the first with knitting needles.. their
really strict this past several years and I don't
blame them at all... scarey out there!
Thanks so much for your comment
Hope Honey is healthy and well..

What sneaky girls. Well as for mine only the BR's are laying. The EEs are not but one keeps sitting in the boxes. They have been laying in only on box. The wait turns. We will see what happens when the other two start laying.

Loved reading your post...made me smile. I have one chicken "Rosie" that always seems to be brooding...no idea what to do about it.

Have a great weekend,
Connie

I laughed out loud at the chickens standing in the corner. how in the world did you get that? Too funny.

I love your chicken stories and I am happy to have the fun of chickens vicariously rather than for real, especially when it comes time to get them ready for dinner! I want to hear about that when it happens.
