:: Getting To Do’s rather than HAVING To Do’s –Day 6 ::

While I’ve been busy around here… work, work, working on getting things done—I’m getting to do something I’ve been longing to do for a while now.
I’m getting to sew with my vintage Viking sewing machine…!  Oh man! I can NOT tell you how thrilled I am about that.

 Viking sewing machine pm
It sews so smooth.

I’ve not had any problems with it—I love the sound it makes as it is humming along.

I’m so very grateful for this $15 machine. Don’t get me wrong now—I DO LIKE my Elna…
but we have a history.  I’ve had my fair share of hair pulling with that machine.

But  the Viking-
It just doesn’t give me the problems I am generally used to having when I sew.
There is something about it, you know, that causes me to enjoy sewing with it.

It could just be that finally after all these years, I’m getting to enjoy sewing.

It could be …FINALLY, after all these years; I’ve organized my sewing notions and paraphernalia so that sewing isn’t so stressful. There is nothing like trying to sew and not being able to find that little “something”. I almost had that problem today—and I just couldn’t figure out what I’d done with the upholstery needles I’d bought from the Husqvarna dealer; I was sure I’d put them in the sewing box where I keep all my other needles. Finally, I went to get the upholstery thread and THERE THEY WERE!  I was so happy I’d finally  taken the time to organize that box.
It could be I’m at a stage in my life where I’m sewing what I want…and I’m not HAVING TO SEW because of any reason, except that I WANT TO.  That is so 'child-like' isn't it?

There are so many things that we MUST do around our homes—because they just HAVE TO BE DONE.  I’m guilty of looking at those things with dread and distaste.  I can’t help but wonder—how much I’d enjoy doing them if I looked at them as a privilege instead; if I looked at them as though I were getting to do those things…rather than having to do them. Perhaps look at them as a gift--something to be Grateful to God, for sure. I wonder what God thinks of this child?

Then it made me feel sad—because of the people who have come and gone to my house—I wondered if they could tell that I didn’t really want to do something and if it made them feel bad—as though they weren’t welcomed or perhaps an inconvenience?   There are so many things we take for granted—getting to cook a hot meal for our family, getting to run fresh clean water over our dishes, faces and bodies… getting to drink it.
These are just things that popped into my head today as I was getting to sew---
in doors,
with electricity.
On something totally frivolous.

What are you GETTING TO DO?  Is there something that you HAVE to do…and just don’t like doing it? I don’t like washing dishes…guilty. I’d rather take a whoopin!

…well, not really, but I would rather hang laundry on the line, than stand there and wash dishes.  I would bet---I wouldn’t even want to load a dish washer if I had one. I try to wash my dish as I use it.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who has things like this pop into their head…while your busy, doing.

I think these things are supposed to pop into your head but you generally have to be in the right frame of mind.

Great post Pat! I'm glad you can use your Viking and that it gives you such joy!
There are lots of things that I have to do, and somehow my family thinks I love to do those things--cleaning, laundry, etc. But the one thing I love to do is my lawn! I'm out there in my neighborhood with all of the lawn crews and husbands doing their lawns, but I'm ok with that. :)
Have a great Sunday!

Good for you Pat! I love your vintage sewing machine and I'm thrilled you are getting so much enjoyment from using it. I'm loving the fall nesting season here too! We've got plenty of to do's and want to's as well! Happy Fall Pat! Those aprons on the line are great too!

Dishes are my least unliked thing to do... does that make sense? I can't say they are my favorite thing to do, but there are things I dislike doing more... like dusting!
What do I "get" to do? I get to gut (not shuffle) the entire garage tomorrow due to 6+ inches of rain yesterday. Everything that was near the floor is soaking wet. :(
I was just discussing this with someone the other day... my cousin says things like "I get to work tomorrow". It IS all in how you look at it.
I won't enjoy clearing out ALL that lumber and stuff... but it is something that has been on my list. I was hoping to wait till after Glendale. The good news... the rain has stopped and it's brought cooler weather.
love the aprons!

I don't like washing dishes by hand, drying them and putting them away, only to come back half an hour later to see dirty dishes sitting in the sink. I really miss having a dish washer for that reason alone, I never have to see dirty dishes sitting around.
But, I do need to be grateful that we have dishes, more than one set even AND I get to wash my dishes with CLEAN hot water. We are more blessed than we know, my friend, and we need to be reminded of it sometimes!
Hugs, cindy

I don't mind washing--but I hate drying. I'll let them all pile up and up and up before I get out a dishtowel! Terrible!

Your Viking is a beautiful thing. I have an old Singer, and they don't make them like that anymore! Even though I have a "new" machine, that Singer is near and dear to my heart.

You have provided the paradigm shift that I needed this morning. It is a privilige to do the things that we do daily and complain about. Thanks Pat! I needed that reminder!

Hi Pat ... enjoying your posts. I used to sew and loved it, but now it is a real chore, maybe because I don't have a "sewing room". Actually, I have my Mom's old Singer in the garage and that is where I stitch a seam if I just have to. Also, love your aprons on the line. I hung some out when I had my garage sale ... loved it and wish I could have them out all the time but my neighbors would think I was a crazy old lady.
