:: Biscuits for the Pup; Biscuit Mix and a Paint Question? ::

This past weekend I spent time cleaning up in the kitchen.
The counters, the stainless steel… and my pantry.
I also made cookies for Buster--- I told you I’d give you the recipe I used. It’s at the end of this post.

pasta canister and busters cookies

The other thing I thought I’d ask…since I’m showing this picture again;
When you paint in your kitchen, do you paint the underside of your cupboards?

Mine are Home made cabinets.  They were here in the house when we bought it 18 years ago. The shelving is particle board …OLD particle board.  Not sure how long the cabinets were here BEFORE WE BOUGHT.  So… sometimes they seem flakey--- and they are not up to today’s standards in building materials I’m sure.
So… do you paint the underside of your cabinets?  I’m wondering if I should, since they are flaky. Because they are flaky--- how much trouble do you think it will be to paint them?
Any suggestions on this would be helpful—and greatly appreciated!

Now for the Dog Biscuits (as per my Aunt)  I'm not sure where she got the recipe; but she wrote it down from memory-- better than I could do.

Dog Biscuits:
1 cup Wheat flour
1/2 cup Old fashioned oats
1 C peanut butter (I used crunchy, that’s what I had)
1 tsp baking powder
1 cup Chicken Broth (I used Pork broth from a roast –worked fine)
MIX
ROLL 1/4’
3 “ cutter yields about 12 cookies
1” cutter yields about 24 cookies…
BAKE:  350° ABOUT 12-15 MINUTES.

Buster Loves them.

***Today… I’m making a baking mix to have on hand in the pantry;  good for biscuits, pancakes and muffins. I’ve decided whatever I can make at home has got to be easier on the budget than driving to ‘tim-buck-too’ to purchase ready made!   I got the last two ingredients for this mix today when I had to go pick up TH’s prescription and make a run to the bank and make some copies.  (…still weighing the cost of printing at home vs. elsewhere)

So I’m asking: Do you have paint tips about the underside of my cabinets?  Do you make dog biscuits for the love puppies in your life?   Do you keep a baking mix on hand in the pantry?  How are you saving on the food budget?  Let’s chat!

Til next time, Be Blessed!

Well, I have pre-made cabinets with that vinyl, I don't know what ya call it, surface. If
I had wooden cabinets, I would paint the underside. Although if yours is flakey particle board stuff it will suck up paint like nobody's business. Prime first? Forget it altogether? See what others have to say. I made dog biscuits years ago for my last generation of dogs. I just shaped them into circles. Yours sure are fancy! Hope Buster appreciates your effiorts.

our home is 14 years old and our cabinets are oak but the underneaths are not stained like the rest of the cabinets. I guess it just depends on if you can see it or not. If it bothers you, then paint it or maybe even cover it will shelf paper.
I do keep a homemade batch of a lower fat bisquick type mix in my pantry.

grocery prices, ugh! I'm not much help here because there is a new Aldi just 3 miles from our home that is really helping me stretch our funds. I am trying to cut our budget by about half so I can spend than money on a debt we want to pay off too.

Yes- When I had older cabinets in our houses I always painted the underside. You could seal them first with a water based poly and that should stop the flaking and that goes on really easy..you can kind of just slap it on and once it dries and you paint it won't flake off then.

My neighbor used to make dog biscuits and give me a bunch so I never had to make them myself. Sadly, we don't have any dogs anymore- xo Diana

PS I had another idea, what if you decopaged some pretty paper on the underside? It might be easier than painting,,,,,,

I like NanaDiana's idea and I have made pre made pancake mix and I put it in the freezer so it would keep for a long time. It was made with whole wheat flour and it was very delicious, inexpensive and good for us!

Hi Pat,
Yes, I painted the undersides of my cabinets. Use Zinsser primer...that stuff is amazing and sticks to anything. Painting should help preserve the particle board awhile too.
I've made my dogs cookies from a similar recipe...they love them. I also slice sweet potatoes into thin strips and bake them on low until crisp - another treat they love!

When I painted my cabinets, I did paint the undersides, because when I sit on the couch in the living room, I can see them. I say give them a quick sanding, and slap some paint on those puppies! :)

I really don't know what to tell you about painting the underside of your cabinets, but if you can see them and it bothers you ... paint them. It might help to preserve the wood and stop it from flaking by sealing it first.
Good luck,

Paint the undersides of the cabinets for sure. If the wood is very porous you may want to seal it first. Then slap on the paint with a brush or sponge roller. In order to switch to eating only organic food, I've had to keep a tight rein on the kitchen. By making sure absolutely nothing goes bad or to waste I can keep the grocery bill to the same as before. The freezer has become my best friend.

Yup, when I lived at our old house with the old cupboards I painted the underneath---they were pretty gross when we moved in---years of grease and food that had splattered up there from the counter. I can not recall the name of the primer (not Kiltz) --but I had a painter come to do some of my ceilings at that house and he used a primer he said would stick to and cover anything. Only one store in our area sold it, but he swore by it ;-).

I suppose the bottoms of our cabinets are painted...but they were painted by someone else. I need to paint the entire kitchen and the cabinets and have yet to make a stab at it.
