:: Office Chair Makeover- More of an Account than a Tutorial, Really ::

This post originally appear first on My {re}Purposed Life -April 2013

First of all, I've never EV.ER guest posted before this post.  If you're a regular reader at Corn then you know what a procrastinator I am...
so here I am, finally getting around to submitting something for just this occasion.  Thanks Gail...for letting me do this. (a very Long time ago)
I am a 're-purposer' and I generally do these little projects "Using What I Have" whether it is for something I need or something I want; I almost always try and find a way to do it on the cheap!

Just to recap--
Some of the things I want to work on this year in 2013--perpetually, as it is now 2014
::THE SHORT LIST::
  • ORGANIZING
  • SEWING
  • UPHOLSTERY
not necessarily in that order
So...We had some rainy days recently; and rather than just sitting around waiting for it to stop and thinking about everything I had OUTSIDE to do... I decided to tackle a couple of projects inside.

This project touches on all 3 of these "THINGS TO DO" IN 2013 --for the whole list and review you can read all about it here.

Just in case you need a VISUAL AID::

All clear?

I'm working in one of the spare-room /slash former SONS room/ Den-Office-Etsy Space????
a.k.a.--The Wonder Room, right now.  STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS BY THE WAY!
Warning:: plenty of pictures to follow at this point.

I recently saved this office chair from a trip to the dump... my one daughter thought it was ugly, left it to the other daughter...who decided it WAS ugly.
NOW I have it. Sad I know.

But...here it is,lying on the floor...awaiting 'A One Woman Surgical Team' to work it's magic.
 It's Ugly.
I got right to work.

I removed this trim and started to remove screws... not having a clue what I was doing OR how this thing was held together.

Got the fabric -covered -plastic -molded -seat -thingy OUT!
...AND unbolted from the swirly swivel legs;

That I could almost PROMISE had an "ON" switch!!
try to hold swirly swivel legs still while holding a drill  in one hand and a camera in the other while removing screws all at the same time.
DAUNTING TASK...I TELL YA!

FINALLY! the seat is removed from swirly swivel legs and fabric is cut-loose!
Just me and my legless, virtually naked, cushy lined chair.

Oh! I almost forgot...
for this project you need::
A drill.
A flat head screw driver
A box cutter
Band-Aids...
A pair of scissors
A pair of 'needle nosed pliers'
probably some GLOVES would be nice!
A staple gun
Staples (not office supplies)
A safe place for loose screws
REPLACEMENT SCREWS.
Fabric of your choice OR re-purpose ONE cute curtain panel
A sewing machine
A SEAM Ripper
...did I say Scissors???
MORE THAN ONE 60 watt bulb (or a Well lit kitchen)
A camera :/
AND....
at least 3 LESS hungry YOUNGIN's

Alright back to the chair...

This is the space at the seat and back of the chair...those are staples in there.
Don't let them fool you...they are sharp!
(They must come out)

Ta-dah!!

I SEWED the back cover and the seat cover together...where the bend in the seat was... I used a curtain panel for my fabric. I believe it's cotton and I cut the hemmed edge off one side. I used a strip of  that hemmed edge to sew over the seam I'd made, to reinforce it.

This is inside the seat and won't be seen.

This is what will be seen. Not perfect...but at this point who cares right?  I'm going to sit on it!

This is about a 2-3 inch piece left at the seam...that will be tucked inside the seat and stapled to HOLD IT in place.

I crammed it into the crevice (DIY technical jargon for those taking notes) between the seat back and seat bottom... and stapled away!

Stretched it around the seat on all sides, careful to tuck the corners etc... again stapling as I went.
Reversing the process, I put it back together onto the frame...
AND! onto the crazy swirly swivel legs.

Ta-dah!

Hold for glamour shot!!!

Oh and the Pillow? It's a Bonus!

It's a very soft burlap bag...Rice came in it. My brother snagged it for me!
Isn't it nice when people know you live by the 'Other Man's Trash- Mantra" ???
There were two little straps on it for a handle and since it had a zipper already... I just cut the handles off and stuffed it with some batting...and I use it for a lumbar pillow in my chair!
Perfectly Cute pillow, huh?  With just the right amount of Green and Orange!!!

I'd like to see other DIY projects I've done here  Corn in My Coffee Pot... (where it's a well-known fact that my favorite color of paint is Ooops!)  especially if you'd like to see how I repurpose, Using What I Have...

Including my bathroom re-do for under $50

antique white bathroom-oval coke

My favorite of All  Faux Wood Floor

...And more recently Fake Art

Til next time, Be Blessed!

Pat, I have two office chairs I bought for 5.00 bucks a piece.. they are in really good shape but I do not care for the blue.. I am thinking of refinishing them in paint drop cloth from lowes..you can get a huge piece for under 20.00, I do not need all you get but I am sure I will find other things to use it on...Your chair looks great.. did you ever finish the sofa and chair.. did I miss your reveal? let me know.. I want to see what you did with it.. Have a great day! Blessings!

Oh Pat, I just love to see how you find beauty in the ordinary or unlovely thing, pull it out, and put it on display!

Lovely! What a great idea. I really like the way it came out.

Nice job Pat! Mr Quirky has a chair something like that and I want so much to get rid of it. I found him a beautiful antique wooden chair on rollers. Beautiful. He did give it a try, but two of the wheels keep coming off. I say damn!

I'll never forget your 'faux flooring', it is surely a classic! The chair turned out great! Girl with a staple gun-watch out world! Ann

WOW! that turned out very nicely. Now I won't be so quick to dismiss these types of chairs in peoples trash piles :) I never thought about recovering them either.

You're so clever!
