:: An Old Friend and A Cool Drink of Water::

I am awakened this morning by the phone. It's 7:22 a.m. The other end...my Old Friend. I'm happy to see her name pop up on the face of my phone. I answer and we talk.  We catch up, we share.

She is dealing with grief in her family. A loss. A brother.
She is having a child go off to College. Staying away from home. A daughter.
She is having her grand-children live far off...with few visits. Then, only special occasions.

Our lives have been parallel in the past. Things have been the same for us... it isn't uncommon.
Right now-- our lives are similar with minor details being the only difference.

She is not a stranger.

We talk. It is like old times. She is a comfort for me.

She lets me VENT!

We are still only a few miles apart--geographically speaking. We never see each other anymore. But when we pick up the phone, it is like we just saw one another.

It's like this fortunate Crepe Myrtle--  I water the chickens under this tree. We are in a drought, the dead of summer. Nothing is flourishing...but this tree has blooms.
A drink of water has helped it to bloom!

I told her I was sleeping when she called. But being the good friend she is, she says, "Wake up I have a few minutes to talk this morning, so I called you."  (obviously, I think)

I smile.
Because, I'm happy to talk to her.

I give thanks to God for this friend he has placed in my life; like a cool drink of water!

He is the rock, his work is perfect; for all his ways are judgement. A God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. ~ Deuteronomy 32:4 .

I have to be careful not to become a hermit cause I like to be home. I am having lunch today with my oldest friend. Sorry about your friend. It comes in waves doesn't it seem?

There are a few wonderful old friends in our lives that never change-at least in the heart. I am sorry your friend is dealing with so much trauma all at once. I think our lives are full of ups and downs like this- xo Diana

Everyone needs a friend like that. One you can go for long periods without seeing, and then pick up the phone and it is like there was never a break in your relationship. Someone who understands you. Someone who has been through the things you have experienced. Someone who is there for you when you need her, and someone you can be there for when she is in need.

Beautiful post.

I think you needed that conversation as much as she did. Coincidence that she called? I think not! :)

I have an old friend like that... she was a second mom to jamie when she was a baby...then the friend married a wonderful man, moved off and that was that. She stopped by last month and we had a nice long visit..when she was leaving I told her that no matter how long it's been, when we talk, it's like we just saw each other yesterday. Nothing like an old friend. :)
I hope you're enjoying your weekend Patricia!

This was a wonderful post Pat. I have a couple of friends like that who I can say anything to and they can say anything to me in return. It's truly a gift. So glad you got your drink of cold water today so you too could bloom. Ann

We all long for those talks with old friends that we can share everything with. You were there when she needed you...how nice!

Wonderful post! You are so blessed to have this friend, and she is, too! I just moved miles away from my children and my friends, and I rarely hear from any of them now except for an occasional email. We are so busy with the rush of life and the internet has sadly taken the place of those personal phone calls.
