:: Frugal Doings::

::Day 19::

Getting things To-Done today…and I almost forgot about To-doing this post! Aaaack!

Here’s what I did today—being Frugal in my home at the same time.

You may remember in the summer… I came up with idea to make hay out of the grass we cut…and we devised a way…using a cooler and some string to make small hay bales for the chicken coop.

Today…I’m happy to say, I went to the barn and grabbed a bale and got the chicken coop ready for cold temps.  I cleaned out the coop and laying boxes and this bale filled the coop up nicely giving my hens a nice clean place to lay their eggs for me!

I was out with my daughter, thrifting, this week.  We hit a couple of thrift stores and a couple of yard sales.

Here is the take:

A small cast iron skillet.  Love this size skillet.  It needs cleaning and seasoning and I’ll be able to make corn bread, personal brownies,  omelets…perfect sized skillet for these things.

The turquoise refrigerator dish… I told you our thrift store doesn’t have much lately in the way of PYREX …this was at a thrift store in Mesquite (Dallas Metro-plex) … GREAT PRICE FOR MY BUDGET AND COLLECTION. That little dish is perfect for jalapeno peppers… I like eating those on just about everything.

The bottle toppers/ POUR SPOUTS may become gifts at Christmas time or they might be going in the shop.(we’ll see about that one)   I’ve seen these used for soap dispensers with vintage bottles.

Today—we stopped at a yard sale on the way home. I bought an Oster electric food dehydrator. (not pictured)

More on that later… I’ve been reading up on how to use it. Looking for recipes and things.  I didn’t get a manual. I haven’t been able to find one on line yet.
I think this is going to help with the food budget and help to eliminate waste.  With just the two of us…we can barely eat produce fast enough before it goes bad.  I’m excited to experiment with it.

That’s it for my thrifting and frugal adventures.  I haven’t been thrifting in a while but I think I did fairly well, for the little bit of money spent and the savings I’ll make with the Hay and the dehydrator--- I think it was all worth while.

I try not to buy something unless I really have a use for it.  I already have 3 small skillets but with these I can make personal sized brownies as small tokens of appreciation, fire up the oven once and cook them all at once! :)

How about you?  Are you saving money when you thrift shop or collecting more stuff?

Oh, coop cleaning and thrifting with a beloved daughter ~ two of my favorite things 'to do". I inherited a couple of those little rectangular Pyrex dishes. Currently one of them is used in the chicken coop for coconut oil; the other has my homemade deodorant in it.

I like the hay! Good for you, what a way to use what you have!

I think a cast iron skillet is always a good thing to find, no? One of these days I'd like to own one.
PS--I thought those metal things were (for a second) wine stoppers. I thought :"WOAH! She's having some party!!!". :)

Great thrift finds....very convicting Pat....especially since we have been in the shut down. Partial pay for full work.. budget cuts....going to have to considet and prayfully seek how to prepare for January. Most likely shut down again. I love your making hay out of grass cuttings...now that is a wonderful frugal idea.....I dumped so much in the field next to our yard....always seems such a waste.. Have a great week. Missed visiting....just been so busy with things....Blessings!

Jocelyn- THEY ARE WINE STOPPERS!!! But I've seen people stick them in bottles with soaps, lotions and mouthwash...to pretty up the bathroom. So...for a little bit of money, I grabbed them up!
All the partying I do ...involves, cupcakes, costumes and jumphouses!!! :D

An iron skillet is always useful in my kitchen too! I use one of those pouring spouts on a bottle filled with dish detergent. Much prettier than a bottle of detergent. Great finds!

I also love those mini cast iron skillets I use mine as a spoon rest on my stove. and the bottle stoppers and great I use them in my kitchen with wine bottles and fill the bottles with cooking oil. I also use them for soap as you mention but then we installed a new sink with a dedicated soap dispenser. I love that cooler idea for bailing grass genious!

Oh my goodness! What an innovative way to get hay! Which is just cut grass!!! Brilliant :) Sometimes I love being frugal for the sake of creativity! The things we can accomplish with what we have when we put our minds to seeing those things differently...it can be incredibly amazing :)
