Fall Garden Planted: I’m hopeful.

I don’t know a soul who plants a fall garden around my neck of the woods~ and there may very well be a perfectly good reason for that ,too.
Because—they probably don’t grow.
We’ve had a terribly hot and dry summer here in Texas. I’m hoping that some rain will kick in soon and we’ll get some cooler temps and that we’ll have mild weather right on through to Winter. That’s what I’m praying for anyway.
I got to thinking. Just because I don’t know anybody that does; doesn’t mean that there ISN’T ANYBODY that does.
So I figure if you’re gonna pray …LET IT BE IN FAITH and plant something!
Kind of like having a prayer meeting and praying for rain--- If you’re praying in faith, then you should probably carry an umbrella with when you go!

I planted some beans, lettuce, spinach, and carrots. fall garden planted 003
You may remember this bed in my front yard.  In February I planted lettuce, beets, broccoli, and squash here; and it was very successful. That is a lone tomato left over from the spring. It is surviving on manure and dish water!

I probably should have cut it back to see how it will do. It is sort of leggy.

But it has tomatoes on it. They are very tiny. You may be able to see them where my palm and second finger is if you click on the picture.
So, it’s done. It’s planted for FALL.  Now all I have to do is sit back and wait for rain- OR carry my dish water out there like I’ve been doing. ~ AND PRAY IN FAITH!
But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. ~ James 1:6

By the time your plants get up big enough to worry about the heat, the heat of 2011 should be a thing of the past.

I'd just keep a good eye on your plantings and keep them moist.

You should do JUST fine!!!

This is the link to a Texas Gardening forum. You should be able to get some good information of fall gardens. I wish you much luck with your fall and winter garden. You'll need to cut and paste the link.

Pat, I'm in your neck of the woods and we are very successful growing a Fall and even Winter garden. Seriously! It is much easier!!! Last year, we grew lots of cabbage, swiss chard, spinach, red leafy lettuce & butter crunch lettuce. Our carrots were not successfull b/c we had the bad nematodes. We will work on fixing that. This year, we are going to plant (waiting for cooler weather though...this is later planting than when we planted last Fall's) all of the same stuff along with: Purple Podded Pole Beans, Green Peas, Parsnips, 2 kinds of Broccoli, 2 kinds of Cauliflower, celery (they say nothing including deer will touch this and it reseeds itself), and several other things. I am looking forward to a change in the garden. We still have gobs of plants left in the garden growing now (we watered), so if we keep them alive, they will pick back up on production. If you ever have questions about what we are doing, do e-mail. You may have more of what they call "blackland" over where you are. Some things do great in that soil while others don't. You may have to help your soil out a bit.

Oh, one more though...the lettuces above we ate (actually were producing) from mid-Sept. last year until Easter (which was late April this year). My husband staggered planting. He had planted Aug. of last year & re-planted more Dec. of last year. He bought row covers online. They are not a plastic, but more of a fabric/cloth material. He only used them when it was getting well below freezing. Otherwise, the plants did great! The ones that did not do well were plants we got at Geddes and other places that were not started organic. The ones he started organic from seed were so much more hardy. There were times it got below freezing & he didn't even cover them. Did great! I don't think we could have killed our oregano either. Just trying to encourage you b/c I know it has been a bit of a frustrating summer for any gardener around here.

I hope your fall garden brings a bountiful harvest. Up here in Indiana we're still waiting on our summer garden veggies to ripen up!

We've had a good deal of rain except for the last couple of weeks. I walked around the yard, and the grass went c.r.u.n.c.h. :)
I can't imagine how bad it must be for you.
Good luck with your fall planting!

It won't hurt a thing to plant in the fall, you'll probably get more rain in the fall too...you may set a trend that everyone else will follow if you're successful...I enjoy your blog posts....Mel's Designs from the Cabin....Mel
