Frugal Fodder ~10~

::Kindle vs. a SMART PHONE::

You remember, for (early)Christmas from my son (thing two) , I got a Kindle Paper-white ® ?

I didn't think I'd ever say that I enjoy this piece of technology so much...but I do!!!!

I like it because
  • it's light weight, and while nothing beats a good paperback that you carry along with you, lets face it, paperbacks are bulky and some are NOT lightweight.
  • It holds more than ONE BOOK. So, if I'm not in the mood for a certain book, I have plenty to choose from and can pick what I want to read; and don't have to carry a suit case with me.
  • My latest and most up to date reason for liking it?  The active content App I downloaded on Sunday, while The Honey was watching football. It's called MY CHECKLIST                                      and right now it's FREE at Amazon. (subject to change) just click the link to get it.
    • You download it and you can keep all your lists handy right there, laundry, groceries, projects, TO-DO,  errands, bills, tasks, and plans, etc. You have options to edit, delete, using the keyboard; you create your own lists! Just touch the screen and check the items on your list!  I know YOUR PHONE DOES THAT,right?
  •  The savings!
    • The Kindle connects to wi-fi. I don't have a lap top. But I can check my emails with it. :) And I can read blogs, check the weather and get the news.  I know YOUR PHONE DOES ALL THAT,right? (and I don't need it for videos or music)

We don't have a land-line phone. More and more people are going away from land-line. We did because--we didn't need it, we have cell phones. We strive to keep our cell phone bill down. My own personal cell phone is nothing fancy. It doesn't get 'media- text' (with pictures, graphics, etc). We don't have a text package and have informed people DO NOT TEXT US. Family knows emergency only texts!!!
I use my phone for talking.
Period.
My phone is not SMART.

But my kindle--it's smart! So instead of up- grading and getting a SMART phone. I use my Kindle. I use it for wi-fi, when I'm at home on the couch or at the local Dairy Queen or where ever there is a HOT-SPOT.  I can read a book, check my email, read the news, Or MAKE A LIST ...or check my list!

I could TWEET if I wanted to 'tweet'... I don't tweet. But I COULD!!!

Another great thing? I'm not out the money for a SMART phone.

NOW. Please don't think I'm telling you to go out and get a Kindle or a SMART phone. If you're trying to live the frugal life; by all means do what you need to do in order to do it well. But, if you have one of these devices (kindle)OR maybe YOU'RE TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO BE FRUGAL, LIKE ME... just know that you CAN use it for so much more than just reading books; you don't have to get a SMART phone, be out extra money, and be TRAPPED INTO A 2 YEAR CONTRACT.  Just know.

It's SMART.

I love your reasons for loving your Kindle. I happen to have a Kindle, lap top and smartphone, now I wishing I had not gotten the smartphone. I should have just gotten a regular cell phone. Love reading your blog.

I opted for a smartphone for business reasons. I made a HUGE boo-boo one week and double/triple booked my husband's patients because I was out of the office for 2 days with no paper schedule. He bought me a smartphone that day.
Also, if you have a mobile business you might be able to take credit card payments on your kindle by using a "Square."
Glad you like your kindle!

Good info about the Kindle, Pat. Nice to know. I don't have a reader of any kind. I tend to be the person who gets something just as it is going out of style. So it stands to reason that I probably won't have one for a while. I don't have a smartphone either, and the little phone I do have at the moment doesn't get pictures without charging me. That's just ridiculous. So forget that. I'm not willing to pay. I have never been one for talking on the phone either, so it's no great loss to me and I don't want to sit and stare incessantly at a little square in my palm, while pushing buttons and missing the world around me. I can do that in front of my computer screen, right? It's bigger and easier to read. :)

I don't know anything about the kindle so it was nice to read your post. My hubby has an IPhone, and it's imperative, with him being on the road nights he can email me or phone, whichever. I can email him when I know he's driving and his cb bluetooth tells him that he has an email and he can tell it, literally because it's voice activated, to read the email. Cool, eh?! All these smart technologies are going to be smarter than we are if we aren't careful! LOL!!!! I have my MacBook Air, I can take it to wifi hotspots, but it's not nearly as small as the Kindle. I hope to get an IPhone when my Rogers contract runs out. Hubby says that is the plan, anyways, and he doesn't make empty promises. And I will download books onto it. Now I'm running on... I will go.
Have a wonderful day.

I have an ipad but never read books on it. I like library books. I guess it's what I'm used to.

Like you, we love our Kindles and see no need for smart phones as we use them pretty much like you do.
And there are so many free books! My husband and I both have Kindles and I have gotten us more than 1000 free books on all kinds of subjects by checking the free lists often.

I do have a smart phone and love it, but my son bought me a Nook for my birthday and I LOVE it. I really like the feel of a book, but like your comment, I love that I have more than one book and it is much lighter. I have no grandchildren yet, but I wonder if they will no what a landline (was). I no that by the time I have grandchildren and they are school age, there will no longer be textbooks in schools. I teach at a tech magnet middle school and every student has a laptop with their textbooks on the laptop. Oh, the changes we have seen!

I tried to post a comment, but I'm not sure what happened. Hmm.

Glad you like your technology. I myself, do not own a smart phone or kindle. I am no or low-tech, and like to hold the book in my hands (without batteries).

I would really love one of those too. Maybe later this year. I should put it on my b-day list. Hint to hubby.
