:: Making it SNUGGER- Preparing for the Cold ::

We’re getting ready to have some of the coldest temps we’ve had here in quite a few years.  We’re not getting anywhere near the cold temps that some of you are getting. Nothing below zero…for sure.  But with the wind-chills factored in; it will be a LOT colder than I am used to having.
I for one don’t like the cold.   That’s why when they said that the 16° overnight temps were coming and that north wind started to blow…

snugger winter

I pulled all my furniture in and
made the living room a little bit ‘snugger’
chiefly British
:  a snug cozy place; especially :  a small room
I had never heard of that term before I started blogging. I first read about it here, Jacqueline calls it her snuggery.

But you get the idea.  The drapes are pulled—to keep the wind from blasting its way through the old windows.  I can see them moving from time to time when it kicks up really hard; as well, as feel a little bit of chill. I placed the old treadle sewing machine between the back of the couch and the window…to give a little distance between us that Old Man Winter.  I have blankets at the ready to help keep us comfy  … and yes, that is my Vintage Sewing Cutting Board standing there between the door and the sitting area. It makes a unique and simple wind-break.  It helps to keep the air at bay when coming in the door—so that we’re not blasted with cold while sitting.
The wood stove in the fore ground has been devouring the wood and churning out lots of cozy heat. I like having the furniture pulled in close. I can feel the warmth much better and the wool rug underfoot keeps our feet warm too.
Tonight for supper we had Ketchup Chili with venison and black beans.  I like to put jalapenos and crackers in mine.  It warms you up.

dining
I stayed busy today—cleared off my kitchen table …AGAIN! Don’t know why it is the drop off zone. But it gets cluttered up fast!
It also had the doll house on it from work I’d been doing. I moved it to an out of the way and SAFE spot for now. I won’t be working on it for a while as I’m working on getting organized and paring down. I put away the little Christmas center-piece I’d had there and replaced it with a stack of plates that are listed in the shop.  I like them on the tray as a center piece. I should try and get a better picture during the day. On the far end I’ve placed a couple of hanging plants on a cookie sheet …they had been in the bathroom today getting a drink ,some warmth and sunshine—the bathroom gets a nice westerly sun in the after noon.  But here on the far end of the table…they look a little more intentional and add some interest to that corner of the dining area; rather than just set on the table with newspapers, like they did before.
In the afternoon before cooking and washing Buster … I vacuumed the living room and kitchen rugs and worked on organizing some of the OFFICE/CRAFT/ETSY ROOM…
I’ll post more on that later in the week. It felt good to get some things done on my list.  Things that I’ve needed doing; but just didn’t have the motivation or energy to do.  I’m so thankful I’m having a  bit more of that lately!
I hope you are snuggled in and staying warm over the next few days as this cold weather bears down on all of us everywhere!

Til next time, Be Blessed!

So teach us to number our days. That we may present to thee a heart of Wisdom. ~ Psalm 90:12

At least this cold is not supposed to last. I'll be leaving drapes drawn too today plus a few other things to keep the cold out. Will have to go out later-- yuck; need to run the car anyway. Hey, I have a cutting board very similar to that. It was my mother's.

We are not looking forward to it either! temps should not rise above freezing here until Wednesday afternoon. Oh well, this will be an opportunity to try out a couple of new to me soup recipes.

Western PA here...it's supposed to start dropping throughout the day and have windchills of below 30 by tonight and tomorrow. I like your snuggery :)
Here, I have steam heat but the galley kitchen and the little bathroom are not heated. Which is not a big deal until weather like this. Yesterday I made a batch of chicken & rice soup and meatloaf and potatoes and some homemade pasta sauce. This way any time in the cold kitchen will be mostly in and out quickly for food that is already prepared :)

Pat
That IS cold for Texas!!
I'm so glad you have your wood store to keep you warm.
Your living room looks quite cozy, for sure.
It is -37 here again. This makes almost two weeks of this weather...
If it's not ridiculously cold, it's snowing.

Your living room looks very cozy and welcoming.
I woke up to -11 degrees this morning, but that isn't as bad as other parts of the country.
I also have drapes and blinds closed, and should have a fire in the antique stove, but didn't feel like lugging wood inside, so I'm wearing a jacket inside!

I have also been making to-do lists which seem to motivate me to check things off the list and make progress!

We are the one little spot in the country that is warm. I cannot imagine the cold having lived here my whole life. You seems prepared. They kept saying on the weather channel that a lot of homes have been built in more recent times and have not had the test of these low temps ever. Lots of frozen pipes I think. Stay safe and warm.

Hi Pat! We are experiencing the same Arctic blast as you. Seems like the whole country is cold right now. Looks like you know exactly how to handle it too. I love your snuggly look! There's no place like home, especially in this weather. I'm sure your family appreciates all you do to make them comfortable. Stay warm & cozy!
Happy New Year!

How delightful and smart! I love the snuggery look!

Hint: the items landing on the kitchen table each represent something needing a home. The office redo will probably help with this.

I am so not motivated! I need to do so much stuff. But I just sit on the couch in front of the heater, it's been a polar vortex here! wind chills -25 brrrrr at least the sun is shining! :)

great job on the snugger... it makes total sense to me. both my couch and love seat sit up against windows, and I can feel the cold....

good luck with your "to do" list!!!

hi Pat ... don't blame your for making a snuggery ... looks inviting and sounds good to me. That old cold wind seems to find its way in whatever we do. We have French doors in our living room and I did not have drapes on them, so one winter I tacked a heavy quilt over them ... not real pretty, but sure helped keep the cold out. I have dropcloth drapes now and they are wonderful and look good.
Stay warm and be safe.
