Frugal Fodder- Last Bit of Thrifting 2015

I really like my pyrex dishes—these two dishes I inherited from my mom’s house when we packed it and sold it in 2006.  At one time, I had a total of one lid…between them. But accidents happen, and I’m always on the look out for replacements, which are not generally cheap.

image

I found three lids on the same day… 50% off… I got them for $3 bucks!  I was tickled.

Until I got home and realized the small loaf pan I had is missing! So now I have an extra lid… with no dish.  It has a decorative top… so I could use it for a cracker and cheese platter if I wanted!

image

The next item I bought was a want… this mint green rooster.  It’s a planter. It has a stamp on the bottom of it…but the glaze has filled it in so much that I can’t see the maker.

 image

No matter really.  I got it for the subject matter and color, can you tell?

The last picture shows two small crochet hooks for doily or lace making.  I’ve not done it years… we’ll see if my eyes and hands are up for it.

image

I almost never see crochet hooks at yard sales, thrift stores or flea markets; so when I do, I grab them up. The knitting needles are because I began teaching myself to knit a few years back and thought I might pick it up again…and give it another try.

Circular knitting is something I’d like to try… since I pretty much mastered the dish cloth! Ha ha! I may have to look at Craftsy and see if there are any easy hat patterns on there. Do you use Craftsy?  I did.  Haven’t been doing many crafts so I took the app off my phone. I’ll re-install it and check them out. Anyway, it was fifty cents…  I haven’t lost much if I don’t pick them up for a while.

‘Til next time, be blessed.

Patricia

Tidings of Joy!

Dear Reader:
I hope that you know true peace comes NOT from gifts or monetary things, but that you experience peace and joy that comes from God above. I am always humbled by each and every one of you that reads and comments here at Corn in my Coffee-Pot.  I have loved getting to know you through the years and appreciate your friendship. I pray that you have a very Merry Christmas!

Warmly yours, Patricia

Just When I Think...

That I might be getting back to blogging, I sit down to write and there is a series of things keeping me from it.

Last week ,or along about last Monday, I sat down and tossed out the ever-so-fun, not to mention easy Q and A template.  DID YOU EVER...hit an all time dry spell when you’re posting fun facts about yourself, that only your family  and a few really close friends ever needs know?   That's me...right now.

After that… it was the internet. No not THE internet.  Just my internet. It’s awful.  There are so few options here where I live…that don’t cost an unbelievable amount of moo-lah!  Basically, you get what you pay for.  I actually called them on the 11th and they said they’d be out on Monday, the 14th!

It didn’t happen.  Late Monday I got the call from the service guy… I’ll call him Juan.  He ended up at my house early Tuesday morning.

I was without internet all day.  Not the longest day of my life… but it was quite up there!
Tuesday evening… another service guy calls and said he was coming back out instead of Juan… this guys name was Shaun.  I’ll leave you to wonder if both of these names are real or made up on the spot!

I will say this… by the time Shaun got here, there was a torrent of rain spilling out over my house.  Shaun climbed up there anyway and made the proper repairs to the internet…
then came inside and made sure everything was working satisfactorily before he left… taking Juan’s ladder with him when he left. Yes, that ladder was my only hope all day, that someone would indeed be back to get the internet working.

** At this point, I need to remind myself to go ahead and write an email to the Wifi company commending Shaun for a job well done, and for being a trooper in the rain, on my roof, around about DUSK.  I mean, he should get a pat on the back!

Then, Thursday came… and the WI-FI was iffy.

There was a handful of other interruptions… no need to go into all that. Let’s just say… the “F” word… FAMILY.  HA!

When I sat down to write again… I found out that Microsoft had let Live Writer go OPEN SOURCE and NO LONGER WORK WITH BLOGGER. (THAT’S WHAT THAT MEANS!) Very poor planning in my opinion. After downloading the new Open Live Writer… it STILL does NOT want to work. That was late Thursday.  It took a bit of finagling … but I think I’ve got it all worked out now.
AS OF SUNDAY... STILL NO LIVE WRITER FOR BLOGGER.

But my word!  it’s a hassle!!!

For now, I’ll be posting from the Blogger platform—Kudos! to all who make blogging look so easy.  I applaud you.

Somewhere along in there… I got a hair cut.
It turned out pretty well; all things considered.
I went from waist length to neckline.

I cut it myself.

‘Til next time be blessed!

** Consider it pure JOY, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  ~James 1:2

Kernels of Corn: Fall Edition 2015

image

Yes!  I’m still here.  Thank you so much for the kind words and inquiries—many of you have written wondering if all is well with our family here in the country.

On with the Kernels of Corn:

1- leaky camper—requiring more sealant, patching and new wall board/panels.  Read that:  very discouraged.

  • Lots of English/Comp homework

2- Tomato plants—We got bumper crop of tomatoes; it was small, about dozen, total.  It was unexpected, but noteworthy.  Very tasty.  I’m so glad we didn’t pull those plants at the end of summer!

  • Essay after essay--- learning some ‘mad skills’ in writing!

3 –4 little boys here most week days-- The Twin cousins and #Vindor the Small and #Haiden-was-Here (say that like your reading back-to-back weather alerts)

  • Maintaining, an “A” in English is more difficult than I thought it would be.

5 Days of school left-- (except I don’t have to take the final in English…oh yay!  Me!!!!)  Really, it’s only 4 days… ELATED!!!!

  • Then of course there is Algebra…

6 Days (give or take)-- In about 2 weeks of time, a torrential down pouring rain totaling about 6 days resulted in not just 1 leaky camper, but also, a leaky roof in the bathroom, a wonky WI-FI antenna (due to high winds), ants…

trying to get out,

out of the rain,

boom, boom, boom!!!

Yes, they crawled into the hole of the wonky WI-FI  mount plate, and came into the bathroom, along with RAIN…

  • Found out Thursday, Algebra II—is on the schedule for Spring classes, before I can take COLLEGE ALGEBRA. (I’ll share that another time)

Fall Foliage at CCL

So, yes, all is well.  Just as I figured, when I started school in late summer; that I’d be too busy to go to school, blog and be actively involved with my family, gardening, animals—it happened.  It wasn’t long and school has taken front seat to a lot of things.  I’ve not blogged in over a month!  The Honey has taken over chicken coop duties, feeding the dog and quite a few of the day to day chores around the house.  Nothin’ wrong with that, right?  Especially, the dishes.  I don’t like doing the dishes.  It’s an even trade though, he doesn’t like hanging out the laundry.  For now, we’re ok with this arrangement.

****The photos were taken on the drive back from getting groceries yesterday. We hardly get fall foliage…so I was happy to see the changing leaves.

Kernels of Corn no. 10–Mid October

Have you ever been so exhausted AND you were SO restless and collapsed right where you were?  Is that what they mean by sleeping like a baby?

 image

isn’t he precious?  Liam—was just that the other day. He would NOT go to sleep.  I finally picked him and and put him on the couch with me and let him crawl all over me, until he collapsed.  Eventually, I might have closed my eyes and gotten 10- 20- …40 winks, too!

image

I’m continuing the habit I picked up over the summer of drawing on a regular basis.  I started this after joining ICAD 2015.   I don’t have any formal lessons (as you can probably tell), though I do read a few blogs here and there that give pointers and there is of course, always YouTube!  (full of tips).

If the photo of the drawing above resembles an APPLE, well, then I guess the practice is making improvement and you tube is in fact helping!

image

While looking for a particular set of photos from 2003—I found this old picture of myself.  I snapped a picture of it with my phone.  I cropped just the face, no point in showing all of me, BUT…  it’s true.  I’ve lost weight in the past 10-12 years!

image

and I’ve stopped coloring my hair.  The gray is starting to come in nicely too.  Oh how I long for a silver head of hair, like my Granny!

…and I have a crate of photos under my bed really need to be cataloged, dated; with names on the backs of the pictures and put into books so that people can enjoy them!  This job has been officially added to my list of TO-DO’s! …hmmm, de-cluttering or crafting lists? …doesn’t matter.  It’s on the list!

image

I snapped this picture…(yes, it’s true I was driving)  on the way to take my grand-kids to school this week.  This sunset was amazing. Taken through the dirty wind-shield of my car just doesn’t do it justice. ** I promise not to make this a habit.  I really try not to even look at my phone while I’m driving. So don’t lecture me in the comments….

image

The last kernel, this go around;  we’re making some head-way on the camper! I was finally able to slap some paint on the inside after getting almost all the trim up.  After that, it will be screens and … oh yeah!  we got the carpet cut and laid inside! I just love the chocolate-y color!

image

Yes… it shows every bit of dirt.

Yes… it’s carpet. IN. A. CAMPER.  Sometimes it’s just better to let the Wookie win. There is a new post here @ Lil’ Camper that Could… if you’re interested.

While I’m on the last Kernel… let me just say, how very kind you all are--- for never once rubbing my nose in the fact  pointing out to me that I’ve misspelled the word kernel ever since I started this little feature.

…AND THAT’S why I love you dear readers! well, one of the reasons.

October already?

I can’t believe it’s here …where has the year gone?  The winter and spring seemed too long; summer seemed too short… and here we are all the way around the calendar again.  I’ve not written a post in two weeks.

…and 31 Days?  Nope. Forget it! It hasn’t happened for me, not this year.  I vaguely remember I had a topic picked out and thought how neat it would be to write about it…

Durned if I can remember what it was about.  I mentioned to another blogger how I miss her writing; she isn’t a 31-day’r this year either.  You know?  that’s okay though. Nothing is permanent. Some things only last for a season.

Don’t get me wrong.  I am writing for school.  I thought about posting some of my papers here, however, we upload them to an online receiver and it digitally checks for authenticity.  I haven’t told my instructor that I blog and I don’t want the digi-tron to flag my paper as plagiarism.

Most of what we write is based on our own experiences;  being I’m the oldest in the class (did I tell you my class mates are the same age as some of my grand-kids?) … well, I’ve got lots of experiences!

Oh, before I forget!  On Sunday, we attended our first Gender-Reveal party.

I’ll be honest—I didn’t know what the protocol was for this event.  It’s not a shower.  It’s not a delivery.  It’s an announcement.  There’s food, cupcakes …is there ever a time inappropriate for cupcakes? I mean seriously.  I want there to be cupcakes for family’s lunch after my funeral.  Cupcakes are the best!

Anyway,  Gender-Reveal, in case you’re wondering--  Take diapers!  Boy or Girl…doesn’t matter, it will need it’s little bottom covered!

In our case… we’re getting a new Grand-daughter!

image

Spoken like any man would say… Our son announced…

“Purple.  I don’t know PURPLE MEANs?!”

Back on the subject of 31 Days for a second. I hear tale… if you’d like to write, you can still jump in there and join along!  If you don’t take the challenge to write during this time, every day, for 31 days… you might still be interested in reading something fresh and new.

There are plenty of blogs to choose from. I’m reading And,Per Se And …art, life and everything in between.

It’s good.

‘Til next time, blessings to ya!

A Short Post on Thursday-

I took this photo of the hedges a few weeks ago; they’re planted outside the Technology building, on the college campus. I think they’re so pretty, but I’m not sure what type of hedge it is.  Maybe you might know!  It’s officially fall now, but some of the interesting plants on campus are still blooming.  I’m hoping to get a picture of one that I saw blooming Tuesday; it was very pretty!

image

Today, I was outside with Haiden (see how I snuck in a photo of him?)  We found this Walking-stick on the side of my car, while getting the mail.

image

Lastly, I didn’t want to be over confident going into my English class this semester and I was really more worried about it than the Beginning Algebra I’m taking. I’m making an A in both classes; however, all my fears of over-confidence in English are gone!

Apparently, I have more problems with punctuation than just exclamation points and ellipses.

image

Most people don’t use them; I use too many.  I apparently, have a problem with SEMI-COLONS as well.

Some people have a way with the English language…

and some people …Not have way.

*There is a new post on Lil’ Camper that Could, for those of you following along with the camper progress.

Finding EVE—I GPS’d my iPhone

What a crazy morning it turned out to be. I woke up way earlier than usual; it was my day to take my grandsons to school.  I had a package of baby belongings to drop off with my other daughter; so the plan was to meet at the Hotel parking lot near the school.

We met and it was decided we’d both go to the pharmacy; the boys would stay in the car while I kept vigil; and my daughter went inside to purchase medicine for them. Afterwards, we parted ways to return to our homes.

At the light—my brain kicked into over drive, when I realized I didn’t have my phone. I knew where I’d put it. She was right ahead of me with only a couple of cars between us.  I sped up and tried to catch her. Once she turned onto the Farm-to-Market hi-way, I realized she was going too fast. I had lost sight of her, as she rounded the corner.

Rather than go after my daughter, I returned to the last place I’d seen her. I searched the parking lot. She wasn’t there. I drove slowly through town, looking as drove.  I finally, just went to my daughter’s house.

The look of surprise on THAT Girl’s face was almost comical.

“Hey, Mom! What’s up?!”   We had just seen each other, and the last thing she knew was; I was on my way home.

Frantically, I asked her, “Do you have my phone?!”

I could see the look of surprise, on her face, shift to puzzlement, almost like a child having been promised ice cream, being told “it ALL melted.”

Immediately, she knew; that what she had heard and seen coming off the top of her car was in fact, my phone.  She knew what had to be done; recalling where she’d last been seen; while I stayed at the house once again with the boys; my daughter drove off, to find it.

There was no use.  She was lost. After searching a good while and listening to my daughter apologize for something that was clearly NOT her fault. I decided to return home without her.

The whole while I was driving, I kept thinking of my shattered phone. Not only was my phone probably lying in a bar-ditch shattered to bits; but my security had possibly been shattered as well!  What if… it weren’t broken and someone found it. There information on my phone that was private and personal?  I felt vulnerable.  Could someone crack the pass code and get this vital information?  I was angry at myself for being so careless with such an important part of my life.  I couldn’t protect her anymore; all I could think of, was how can I protect myself now?  I’d have to call and have the phone deactivated.

The tension was high when I returned home-- the same feeling you get upon entering a funeral home, silence and awkwardness.  There were no words. I finally made my way into my son’s room, and asked him, “Can we G.P.S. my phone?”  It was like giving my son permission to have fun with TECHNOLOGY!  His eyes, literally glazed over.  After a few minutes he came to me with his dad’s iPhone. I gave him some encrypted data; and in just a few minutes… He handed me the phone. There on the screen, was a dot, flashing—like a beating heart.  The text at the top said “EVE”.

corn in my coffee pot

There she was—waiting for me to come and rescue her.  My daughter came and joined the search party. We all walked along the hi-way’s edge searching and searching, ever hopeful. One old cowboy, pulled along side us in his big red pick-up truck, seeking answers.  “Were we alright?”  “Are you looking for something?”  I assured him, we were ok, and there was no immediate cause for alarm, and I thanked him for stopping.  We went on searching.

The GPS was refreshed.  We’re within 300 feet!

I WAS giddy with excitement.

We continued to search; and we called, texted, and listened for a response.

REFRESH.  Ten Feet.

Call. Text. Listen.

Finally, we heard her call out, like a train whistle in the distance, on a chilled, foggy morning. We stopped and strained to listen, one more time.

EVE was found, under a thorny bush, beside a long, winding hi-way; naked and broken, never forgotten.  Still through it all her face barely had a scratch on her.

 corninmycoffee-pot.blogspot.com

There not too far from her lay a snake, nestled in among the tall dry grass.  Waiting and Watching my Apple, EVE.

Sunflower Fields- Doing

Over the Labor Day weekend… we traveled west…to hill country, Honey’s family had their family reunion.  We passed sprawling fields of Sun flowers.  An ocean of yellow!  Beautiful! Honey drove… This photo was taken zooming down Hwy- 67… near Cleburne, TX.

Kernals of Corn no.8—Oh, By the Way…

Here it is the last day of August, the last K.o.C (Kernals of Corn) I put up was exactly a month ago.  I created K.o.C as recap kind of post—Or, an “Oh By the way… this or that happened.” Sometimes, I’ll write about things I’ve read, recipes, projects; but lately it’s really, just been, “Oh, by the way…”
HIS:
We’ve had a month of appointments for the Honey.  He’s met with two new doctors; a specialist and a general practice doctor.  He has insurance now and we’re going private sector for medical now, instead of the V.A.  His meds were changed back in July; and I’ve seen a marked improvement in his over-all energy and well being.
HERS:
For me, unless you’ve been under a rock or …where-ever, I’m going to school! I woke up one day and decided I was going to take the TSI (Texas Success Initiative) at the local community college and registered for classes. I have thought about it for a long time; I finally did it. The semester started last week.  Right now… I’m beside myself.
CRAFTING:
I’ve had a craft/ art bug, this summer.  I still draw something, though not everyday; like I did with the ICADs- 2015.  For school I made a book bag, (messenger style); and this week, I made a cover for my English Book. *edited to say:  I sewed this up from drop cloth material. Very durable, yet soft! I love it.

corninmycoffee-pot.blogspot.com
My thinking on this is to keep it preserved, it is a soft bound book, I would like for it to stay in relatively good shape. I’m not sure if I’ll sell it, like some students do when the semester is over, because it is an excellent resource!
I won some really cute stationary earlier in the year from Lydia’s Post… I kept this book mark and am using it in my English/Comp book.  I like seeing it when I open my book.  I use it as I’m reading to help stay on the line, I probably need my eyes checked again; and the print is kind of small! corninmycoffee-pot.blogspot.com
EXERCISE:
Today, I swam after almost 2 weeks of NOT swimming.  I just wanted to get into that water after being outside. It’s still pretty warm here.  I had a stressful morning, came home hung out the laundry and then went for a swim! It felt good to exercise. It felt good to be in the water. I’m going to miss swimming.  I’m thinking after we shut the pool down, I’ll go back to a walking routine.  That’s my plan anyway.
I always have plans, but when and how I get them done is another story!
‘Til next time, be blessed.
And let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season, we shall reap if we faint not. ~ Galatians 6:9

Evolution of a Messenger Bag- part 2

** caution:: while reading this post you may or may NOT be subjected to subliminal imaging resulting in EITHER strong cravings for bananas  OR!  an aversion to GREEN bananas and/or fruit flies. You’ve been warned.
Earlier in the week I showed you my bag I made for school.  It’s a messenger bag.  My pictures were blurry; and I don’t think I gave too many details about it. It is of course recycled materials.

Oma Goes to College or A Messenger Bag

It’s turned cool outside, its thundering and we may get rain—I’ve got the windows open for the second time in 4 days.
I love days like this. Typically, I’d be sleeping in on a day like today—but I have Liam this morning, the second day of school.  I rode with my daughter to take the boys and then we stopped at the bakery on the way home, for deli meat and kolaches; after that a quick stop at Wal-mart for meter strips, fruit for my snacks and smoothies. I also bought a cheap notebook and new ink pens for school. I like Paper Mate in black ink—our Wal-mart doen’t have them! Why not?  I don’t know!!!
I’m starting my English class this evening.

Summer, Fall and the Start to Something New

corn in my coffee pot @2015
The summer is winding down.
The summer is winding down.  Forgive me, I just had to read that ONE MORE TIME.   It’s been a long time since I’ve thought in terms of summer coming to an end; along with Fall being the start to something new and fresh—like school!
I don’t even know where to begin to tell you about what led to this event.

Camper Décor for Cuteness Sake

*affiliate links to follow
I spent the biggest part of the weekend finishing up some paper work for school.  Most of mine was complete. However, my oldest daughter is going to school; along with our youngest “the nurse”  (she’s returning to get her RN degree, she is currently an LVN) The oldest needed a transcript.  Yeah… do you think I KNOW WHERE that paper work is 10 years later?   Not to mention, I lost some files a few years back when the computer went CAPOOT!
LUCKILY, I found a couple of my notes and was able to get one put together.

The rest of the weekend, Sunday… Campering!

It’s Not a Rumor--

I posted last night on Instagram; and I just wanted to tell you gentle readers.
It’s the absolute truth!  I bought new shoes.

They’re not just any new shoes, either; they’re back to school shoes.
YES!  I’m going to college!

Taken Up with Old Ways…

This summer has definitely been a season of change for me.  I’ve had my hand in things I don’t normally do; for instance drawing.  I enjoyed ICAD 20.15 – so much I bought a sketch book and have continued to draw or sketch regularly.
I recently, began crocheting again… making cute little hanging towels for my daughters kitchens! It made the time go quick at the hospital today… and it’s nice when the weather is too hot to be outside, but I want something to do with my hands!  It’s light work…so it doesn’t make me hot, like crocheting a blanket would!
I’ve also been taken up with old ways…

The Official update on the Honey-

Late last week I gave a brief update on the hospital visit in Dallas for The Honey… (if you’re new here… The Honey, is my husband)
I’ve had several of you continue to ask about him, telling me that you’re praying for him and for me; I appreciate that so much! More than you know.

Stubble, Sketch Books and Scribbles

Do you journal privately AND blog?
Many years ago I wrote consistently in a journal and then Jesus FOUND ME. 'Cause I was lost. I did away with those journals.
BURNED THEM. Like stubble… they went up in flames!
Old words , old wounds, old me.
I began journaling with gratitude and thanksgiving and supplication ... But I don't do much of that anymore. I find myself reaching for the keyboard instead.
It’s my priorities that are askew!
I should be writing. I should be journaling. I want to journal. I ask myself who will read it?
Right now, I have garden journals, household/decorating and project journals (kind of a scrap book of sorts); there is a  family Holiday Journal and I have a daily calendar…that is sort of like a journal. It is chock full of appointments, reminders, our budget is tucked inside with due dates and important notices. Another glimpse inside our lives.
