DIY Drop Cloth Roll-up Shades TUTORIAL

This post was featured here:

Photobucket

Thanks Gail!  @ My Repurposed Life

DIY roller shades

You would think I'd be able to find cord lock and pulley just like the ones I used for my shade. I looked online and I also looked at Lowe's in both places had similar cord locks and pulleys but none just like what I have here.  I'm going to attempt to give a short tutorial on how I made my shades. But I'm using these cord lock and pulleys.

Cord Lock and Pulley Assembly

For this project I recycled parts from match stick blinds  I also recycled the drop-cloth curtains that I made some years back for my living room.
  • If you’re recycling parts from blinds like I did, you may need a drill and bit…these were pop-riveted together.  You just drill through the pop-rivet and the pieces come apart.

Drop Cloth Curtains

I cut the fabric to width; I wanted my shades to fit inside the window frame, rather than over lap.  After removing the border and the header on these Drop Cloth curtains I decided to leave the shades the length that I had left, on the fabric.

  • You would need to measure your window and cut your fabric to fit adding about a half inch on each side for seam allowance. DIY roll-up shades

After I cut my curtains down to size—I ironed and hemmed the edges. I only had to do this on one edge for each shade—because I incorporated the factory edge into my shade. Makes for less sewing that way!
I attached my pulley and cord lock to my bamboo rods, making sure the cord lock assembly  was on the right hand side of the shade.

Then measured for each pulley on the shade and made button holes for the the hanging tabs to fit through. This will help prevent tears.

Next is the CORD ASSEMBLY. Most people find this a bit fiddly. SO… I took lots of pictures; hope it helps.

  • You need two pieces of CORD for each roller blind. (mine is recycled from the match stick blinds
I’m not giving exact measurements for the cords because it will vary according to length and width of your shade.

  • For roller blinds the general rule for pull cords is:
For a right handed pull cord: the left pulley cord needs to be approx. 2 x the length AND 1 x the width Plus enough to draw the cord with about 18- 24 inch is usually sufficient.
The second or right pulley cord needs to be 2 x the length and an equal amount to left cord for drawing.
Starting with the left side cord - thread cord up through right side pulleyhow to thread roll-up shadesCord lock pulley and cord

-across to left side pulley
DIY cord lock roller shades

-down length of shade, up the back; you’re basically making one big loop!
image

-tie pull cord in place. ( my pulley had a two rings 1 for hanging/ wall mounting and 1 for fastening the cord ends)
If yours does not have this you can sew a couple of ‘D’ rings to the top back of your shade for cord fastening and hanging.

FASTENING SECOND Cord:
-thread cord through pulley from right to left – a pair of tweezers comes in handy for threading the pulleys.
DIY Cord lock pulley Assembly
- run cord down length of shade
- run cord up back of shade – another big loop!

- tie to ring

At this point you should have two lengths of cord for drawing the shade hanging to the far right of the shade.
image
And that’s it!
You’ll notice this last picture—I’m not using bamboo. I ran out. So I used a piece of pvc pipe I hoarded  stashed. It’s ok, because that shade was a big wider anyway—it doesn’t matter, once they’re hung you can see what’s holding it up there!
… and now I have this!

:: The Last Week of 2014--

Hi Y’all   I’ve been on VACATION!

VACATION dec 2014 (cute shoes my daughter got me)

no not really…NOT A REAL VACATION.  But we did NOT have our Littles (ie: the grandkids) this week and there has been one project I’ve been wanting to get done around here for a while! I knew I could not do it with them here.

Our Kitchen floor.

This is what happens when the LITTLES are here AND I TRY AND DO ANYTHING. They want to help!  Last Year, when I was trying to decide what to do with our floor in 2013  and  when HAIDEN HAPPENED…

haiden was here

Paint was put on the maybe list.  ONE-THIRD of my kitchen is as far as I got with that, THANK YOU HAIDEN.  It didn’t hold up—it didn’t last… and it NEVER SEEMED CLEAN TO ME!   The other TWO-THIRDS was the same way… never seemed clean.

If you’ve read here for any length of time you know about my bathroom floor.  I covered it in PAPER AND POLYURETHANE almost 3 years ago—come February.  I’m happy to say—it has held up so nicely.  It has taken a lot of traffic and a lot of POOL TRAFFIC in the summer.  Still … it holds. HERE and HERE faux wood floor 2pm

That was the deciding factor.  The durability.

KITCHEN FLOORS

So that’s what I’ve been doing this week.  I said it would take 5 days… and thought really…REALLY, it could and I MUST get it done in 3.  It took FIVE!   Over-all I’m pretty pleased with it.  It was hard work.  I wasn’t expecting the cold to come on as fast and cold as it did…and seemingly to LAST!  We pretty much camped out in the back part of the house for 2  of the 5 days… but it was fun!  In a weird—QUIRKY sort of way. ;)

So, there’s no TOP 10 posts for the year… No RE-CAP… none of that.  I’ve exhausted myself and am going to have a rest. (soon, I’ll be having to paint these walls and trim…but not this year!)

Tomorrow NEW YEARS DAY- we have our Annual Family Gathering at my daughters home.  Friday I have her 2 littles for a few hours in the morning (doctors appointments…OH! THAT IS GETTING CLOSE… NEW BABIES WILL BE HERE BEFORE WE KNOW IT! Then Saturday and Sunday--- MORE REST.

I’ll pop in and show you a few things that took place in the middle of all the PAPERFLOORING… some surprises.  I will also try and get my “how to”  updated.  This being the second floor to paper—I used some new techniques to make it go more smoothly.  KEY POINT:: watch the weather HAS ALREADY BEEN COVERED. ;)

‘Til next time, Be Blessed!

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy New Year 2014

:: Inexpensive Gift Ideas for Teens and Sports Fans (guys) !

Here are a few of the gifts that I made this year for the two hardest people on my list to buy for… or in my case, CREATE FOR—teens and guys!
Personalized Mugs for all the Big grand-kids… and
boy were they easy!
personalized mugs
I made eleven mugs for under $11 bucks.  That was including the OIL BASED SHARPIE MARKERS…
Black, Gold and Silver … and the $1.50 I spent on eleven mugs right after Christmas last year!  Yep, I got them for ¢.10 each.   Filling them with Homemade Cocoa, Homemade Caramels, and Fudge.  They also get a pair of  gloves.  (not pictured)
Pretty clever, I know.
But you too can shop for Christmas 2015 RIGHT NOW!  and find some pretty sweet deals.  I love shopping the local Dollar General for marked down Christmas--
Don’t forget to look for packages of multiples.  Last Christmas I also bought a set of four melamine plates with Dallas Cowboys and Santa on them…
Cowboys and Santa (stock photo- google)
I bought them because they DID NOT have a DATE on them.  So they worked for this year too! :)   But I was able to split the set and fill with goodies for both my son’s in law, who happen to be big fans of the Cowboys.  I topped the plates high with their favorite  Cream Cheese Rolls (tortillas, meat and cheese)  and added COWBOY tree ornaments and those guys beamed!  The loved them!
Every year I say I’m going to start early on Christmas.  This year—these were the first items purchased—LAST YEAR!  That’s the earliest I think I’ve ever started.   I won’t see my Big Grand-kids until New Years Day…but I’m sure they’ll like their mugs.
My littles and my daughters received handmade gifts… either sewn, or crocheted.  I’ll show those later.
I found the
We won’t be having the Littles this next week—and so the Honey and I are about to embark on a 5 day (?) project.  We can’t have them running through the house while this is going on, so NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME!
You can bet I’ll be documenting it… and can’t wait to see how it turns out.  You’ll see it here,  PASS OR FAIL… because I’m transparent like that. ;)
‘Til next time, Be Blessed!

:: First-time Fudge

Today was my Dad day.  Errand with my dad, grab some lunch, empty the trunk of my car at the Good Will… it’s right around the corner from Dad’s house;  very convenient for dropping of items I’ve been packing up or sorting through…

Today, an indoor grill, a singing lobster, 3 purses and two bags of clothes that are now too big for me!  YAY!

Came home—snuggled with Vincy and rocked him to sleep.  He was overly tired from playing when I got here around 1:30 pm — a few bars of Moon River and he was out!  That’s his favorite song that I sing to him.  I don’t kid around, that baby LOVES THAT SONG!

BIRTHDAY FUDGE

As soon as he was asleep, I was ready to try my hand in the kitchen making fudge.  I’ve always heard you either CAN make IT… or not.  Apparently… I can make FUDGE!

FIRST TIME FUDGE RECIPE

I was afraid it wasn’t turning out, I was patient and let it cook—the recipe I used had two times of 15 minutes with in the recipe… so I ended up cooking this first WHILE STIRRING about 15 minutes and then WHILE NOT STIRRING… another 15 minutes. ( a bit sketchy for me… not on the part of the recipe- I didn’t read through the recipe ENOUGH TIMES! )  I kept checking for the ‘soft ball’ test.

 FIRST TIME FUDGE

It wasn’t pretty going into the pan, because it was starting to set up pretty quick, BUT!!! I was hopeful at that point.  It isn’t smooth… it is a slight bit grainy.  HERE IS THE REASON-

FROM HER NOTES:

NOTES:

For best results, do not double this recipe. The directions must be followed exactly. Beat too little and the fudge is too soft. Beat too long and it becomes hard and sugary.   OH YEAH!  I DEFINITELY DID THAT!

But over all—CHOCOLATE-Y GOOD!   When Honey tried it… see that corner missing?   Oh yes!  He told me it tasted just like what his dad used to make.  {big grin}

I call it  --A SUCCESS!

I’ll try again before Christmas or New Years for sure.  I hope to get better with each try.  Wouldn’t fudge be a SWEET GIFT for my VALENTINE?

Then in April for our Anniversary…?

…June for Father’s day?

By this time next year… He’ll be so sick of my FIRST TIME FUDGE.

He’ll get pie for his next birthday!

‘Til next time, Be Blessed!

:: Chatty, Christmas Ramp-up and Crocheting

DSCF5968

On Monday, I was cut loose from the jury panel and dismissed after being there about 4 hrs.  I was certainly glad about that.  Of the last 4 times I was called in, I’ve been chosen 2 times—I think I was on the brink of being chosen the time before this one—but a paper fire, in a clerks trash can downstairs,  got us all dismissed that day after being evacuated and then filed back through the metal detectors.

Anyway, I left there and went to Wal-Mart—I don’t know that I’ve every mentioned it, but we got a new Wal- Mart near us about 1 year ago—I hardly am ever that way, but I do prefer it over the “OLD” Wal- Mart near the lake; especially in the Summer.  Not news worthy for sure, because there is a Wal-Mart in every town now days.  It’s not my favorite source  to shop--- but, on occasion they have what I need in a pinch.

On this trip, I shopped for  OIL-BASE SHARPIES.  I’ve got dollar store mugs that I’m personalizing.  I also bought the ingredients for Fudge—Wednesday is The Honey’s birthday and he LOVES fudge, he talks about how his dad always used to make fudge!   I’ve never made it—so I’m hoping it turns out. ;)

** I know I said, “I have a pie to make.”  But after thinking about it—I thought he’d like the fudge better.  (so I really, really, hope it turns out.!!!

After Wal-Mart, I went to the WATER DEPT. and filled out a LEAK ADJUSTMENT FORM and was able to get the water bill lowered due to the leak.  By the time I got back to the house they were already calling with the adjustment—and cautioning that our bill may be higher next month since they had already read the meter.  She told me I can only take one adjustment a year—so I might want to wait until next month.   I thought about it a minute… We turned OFF the water early that Sunday morning—and they read the meter on the previous Friday. In the mean time, I if I wait to file the paper work—I miss the 15 day window to dispute THIS bill.   They GET YOU both ways!!! :/   I instructed her to file it.  I’ll take my chances with next months bill!

I came home—and Honey had both kids crashed out taking a nap!  He has the magic touch, I guess.

He said, they played hard all morning.

Probably a ‘tickle-match’!

DSCF5965

I ate some lunch- and started crocheting!  I don’t know why, I just wanted something busy for my hands.  I really didn’t feel like getting up to DO ANYTHING.  But sitting and crocheting was fine with me.  I was able to make One stocking on Monday and pieced and finished the second one Tuesday morning!

I saw Sandy’s stocking at Teacup Lane were both so cute… I was inspired!   It’s not her pattern; she linked in her post to the original pattern, free on Ravelry – well, Y’all know I don’t follow a pattern. ;)   But, I DID LOOK AT IT!   These are OOAK!  (one of a kind)   They worked up really quickly!

 mittens with stars

On Monday you saw the mittens I started sewing over the weekend.  The picture is dark—but I crocheted 3 sets of stars yesterday before crocheting the stockings.  The stars are for the Mittens and hats I’m making for the boys.  Crocheting is my ‘GO-TO’ craft.  While I am still learning and experimenting with sewing—and I DO LOVE IT;  I have a natural feel for a crochet hook—and am able to improvise and WING IT a lot of the time.  I often think I should just improve upon my crochet skills – and make sweaters or something.

Today, I’m taking Dad to run his errands. Then back here— I’ll spend the rest of the day with Honey, nothing too elaborate for Dinner, and then we’ll try that fudge!   I’m sure he’ll want to try making it too.  He likes to dabble in the kitchen sometimes.  It’ll be fun!

‘Til next time, Be Blessed!

:: Catching up on Some Reading-

*affiliate links be here!

Kindle Box-Home Doc

About 2 years ago, I was gifted, by my youngest son; a Kindle Paperwhite.  This is not something I wanted or asked for—it isn’t anything I THOUGHT I’d EVER want.  But, I’ve come to enjoy it; and after owning it for 2 years—I discovered something about it LAST WEEK!

Something I didn’t know.
I can read PDF files from it!!
Seriously, I DID NOT KNOW THIS.
Do you know what this means?
Basically, it means I have a folder of un-read documents on my desktop—waiting to be read!
Kindle pouch 2
I figured this out after I downloaded a free book last week—in pdf format.  I was quite disappointed because I hadn’t had time to sit and read it AT.THE. COMPUTER.  (my free laptop died, another story for another day)

But, I soooo wanted to read it.  I started doing a little bit of research and GOOGLED IT…  and low and behold, all I had to do was plug my KINDLE into my computer and move the file over!   Is this some secret?  No.

I just never thought of checking it out until now.

One thing, when reading PDF files from your Kindle Paperwhite… the font can not be SET.  You have to use your fingers to enlarge the text; and it IS A BIT FIDDLY.  I found that turning my Kindle to LANDSCAPE in the settings helped though it shortened the page link and took more swipes with the finger to finish the page. Over all—it beats having unread works on my PC –to be read later!

I’ve included a list of some of the PDF files I’m reading. Some are short, some are long; there are books for the home, improving skills, Spiritual encouragement, and something for the kiddos!  Some are free!  I don’t download any books that aren’t free. ;)

This is my short list:

  • Giving God the Worst of Me by: Dana K. White of A Slob Comes Clean
  • Four Basic Steps to Budgeting by: Jessi Fearon
  • 31 days to a Heart of Hospitality by: Edie Wadsworth (no longer free) I’m just getting around to reading it, because well,
  • slipcover_ebook  @  pinkandpolkadot.net (no longer free)
  • Jimmy the Racing Frog

  • SHORT STORY WRITING by:  Charles Raymond Barrett, Ph.B. c. 1898 / 1900  (you may search for this on line, but I can’t vouch for any link, I’m not sure where I got this one.)

I have some reading to catch up on, now if you’ll excuse me.
‘Til next time, Be Blessed!

:: No Water, No Bath for Buster-

Sunday we were supposed to have warm weather and sunshine.

I was going to get Buster a bath.  It was time—and he needed needs one…but instead Saturday LATE… late afternoon, we discovered we had a leak.  I thought we did!   In fact, I knew when I opened up the water bill last month that we did.  It was just a matter of finding it.

I really thought our old float and flap—in the tank, in our only bathroom might be the culprit.  But no.  So where?   There were no standing puddles in the yard.

Honey found it Saturday.  The ground was only mushy.

It was near the meter and the outdoor spigot—way out by the road!  Hmmmppphhh… out of sight, out of mind. busted water pipe and trench

Sunday, we got up and started digging… and had to dig not one but 2 small trenches to let water run off that was standing inside the meter box… you can’t see the other trench, but it’s under that pallet, heading off to the left! What appears to be trash, is soup cans and an old cookie sheet, necessary tools for plumbing leaks!

We were certain it was just a small little leak… REALLY, no standing water, except what was inside that meter box. It was like  A BUCKET FULL.  We haven’t had a freeze hard enough to get down in the ground, the water spigot was covered… so we couldn’t figure it out.

Honey, got a little over zealous with the digging… and the next thing you know… TINK!  The shovel stops, he almost falls over forward into the mud… and well, Our small, undetermined leak, became a larger ‘gully-warsher’ !!!

So, we had to draw up some water—and keep it off over night—and He worked on it today with our youngest Son…doing most of the grunt work.  Thank the LORD…for our boys!  Always ready to help dad out.

I didn’t get a whole lot done today.  Certainly, not much washing.  I ran the vacuum and swept the entry and the bathroom--- but after my guys came in a couple of times from the mud, well, I gave up on that!  This evening, I got the dishes washed after the water was turned back on—thank goodness, I had them all done up before we turned the water off, so there wasn’t very many!  Got the bathroom all cleaned up… and the trash can emptied. NOT BAD FOR A MONDAY!

Now… if the warmer days hold off, so Buster can get his bath!

begging to be in my lap

It’s blurry…but he won’t sit still- he thinks he’s still a puppy and wants in my lap. This is what he does.  He BEGS!  “please let me up.”

‘Til next time, Be Blessed!

:: Frugal Fodder 30—Saving on Cell Phones

Wow!  THIRTY Frugal Fodder posts.  I’ve got tons of Frugal Posts,… Let’s face it, I’m pretty cheap!  But I only started numbering them  in November 2012—along the way, I’ve written frugal posts that didn’t get numbered… you can click HERE  to get started reading some of the Frugal posts I’ve written.  I’ll be adding to the list as I am cleaning up my Archives and Labels, so check back and see if there are any you missed!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
There are lots of ways to save when it comes to cell phone plans.  It is always wise to check with your carrier first to see if they can lower your plan and if you can get your plan down to the bare minimum and what your willing to live with. You also want to make sure you won't have a contract to fulfill or be stuck with a whopper of bill!

save on cell plans

Recently, we switched our plan to Consumer Cellular.  The reason for this was simple. C-O-S-T!
By switching we were able to cut our bill almost completely in half. Part of the reason for this is because we have WI-FI here in our home too.  More on WI-FI in a moment.

We just received our first statement and paid our first months bill with them—and I love it!  We don’t have a contract. We aren’t stuck with a set payment and overages.  We control the budget on the cell phone usage.

With our plan we picked what we wanted; and we get ALERTS if we are going to go over our minutes, data, or text usage.  The ALERTS texts are FREE and don’t cost us any extra to receive them.  What do the ALERTS mean for us?   I’m able to log in to our acct up to the last day of our billing cycle and change our plan. The increments only go up by $10 and the savings, so far have been tremendous.   The first month I got an ALERT saying I had $28 in overages.   After logging in and changing the calling plan—it brought it down and gave me MORE MINUTES!  We’re still working out our averages---and with our trip in November, we used more DATA than planned (at the cabin) without WI-FI  but again, I adjusted it and there are going to be no surprises on this next bill.   The best part about it?  I don’t have to leave it at the HIGHER RATE… instead the next month, I can bring it back down to something more affordable and more comfortable on the pocket book!

So back to the WI-FI.   I just found out that if I have GOOGLE HANGOUTS (get the app for iphone) on my phone OR FACE-TIME if it’s an iPhone—I can make those calls using my WI-FI and it won’t cost my plan minutes!  That means savings in our pocket. No more adjusting the plan for us—The Honey can keep up with his brothers and their families… and I can keep up with mine!
I’m going to be giving this a work out for sure over the next month and see what sort of savings I can continue to squeeze out of this set up!

I’ll keep you posted and you can look for any UPDATES on the blog…

At the top of the post I mentioned that I have a lot of Frugal Fodder posts… I thought I’d link to my first numbered FF post as it was around the holidays- Thanksgiving, I think.  Regarding DISHES:  Real vs. Paper
  • Lastly, maybe you have money for the meal this year but just don't have money for the dishes or may not have enough for each person. Ask each household to bring dishes enough for their household! The table will be set and it will be a surprise to everyone how beautiful it can be! Just remember it's the people you share the meal with that counts! Not the money spent. But the savings help! ;)

***** just so you know, Consumer Cellular doesn't pay me anything to write this post.  They probably don't even know anything about it!  I just thought I'd share with you about the great service, price and overall satisfaction I'm getting from the switch!  All opinions are mine-- and any money I SAVE from switching, will go in the PIGGY BANK!  (it's not really a piggy bank, it's an old milk jug); but you get the idea. ;)

:: Regarding Comments w/ DISQUS- Going Back

Right before we went on our little vacation to the Ozarks… I took a chance on changing my blog format up a bit.  “working in the background”
The whole reason behind this was so that people, readers… perhaps YOU… could leave me a comment via your mobile device, iPad, Tablet, etc.  I am linked with a company that pays me to use their mobile platform.  So far…it’s working great!  I’m getting paid for blogging! Yay!   I’m hoping to share more on that in the near future.

However, there is one little problem—IF YOU read there YOU CAN’T comment there.  I CAN’T EVEN COMMENT THERE!   If you want to leave me an email—you have to use a regular desktop or laptop type computer to comment.   I’m still working on it.

Today I removed DISQUS  the *new comment widget I had added to my blog.  I didn’t remove my profile or close my account to DISQUS… I only removed the widget from my blog.  It didn’t do what I initially thought it would do and that is make my mobile readers COMMENTERS.
I asked you for feed back… many of you gave your honest heart felt opinions.  I appreciate that so much.

comment from readers on disqus

Others of you couldn’t leave a comment to tell me your opinions… I would imagine, that was frustrating!  Several of you emailed me to tell me the news!

JUST THIS MORNING:
EMAIL nana diana

MARCI -SCA- disqus email

The thing that really did it… was that my stats DROPPED WAY DOWN!  Not just in comments but over all readers coming to the blog dropped.

PLEASE COME BACK!  lol…

So here in a nutshell (IF YOU’RE INTERESTED)  are my LIKES AND DISLIKES with DISQUS.

DISLIKES:
  • Readers couldn’t comment easily – got lots of emails stating this
  • Privacy- some people stated they didn’t want to sign up for another profile
  • Password- some were asked for a password that WOULD NOT WORK
  • Difficult for Readers/ Commenters to use.
LIKES:
  • Ease of use (for me)
  • Easy sign-in at the sight and others blogs that used DISQUS (for me)
  • MRL disqus comment

    • If you’re signed up with them… it’s EASY PEASY! NO PROBLEMS
  • Easy Moderation w/ many options and ways to moderate (for me)
  • Great Spam protection
    • I had NO SPAM in 2 1/2 wks of use, if fact READERS COMMENTS DROPPED WAY DOWN TOO… NOT A LIKE!
  • I like the THREADED VERSION  of comments a lot better!  (easy to follow conversations)
BOTTOM LINE:
Disqus just wasn’t ‘approachable” for my readers and I always love the interaction you bring to my posts and I love reading your comments.  I can’t read them—if there aren’t ANY!   So after listening to my readers and the daily disappointment in the email box—I made the decision to “get out” now—2 1/2 wks into it.
  • Did I give DISQUS  a fair shake?  No. Probably not.
  • Did I correspond w/ DISQUS and send screenshots?  No. I followed the FAQs, previous posts, etc.
    • with that I was able to figure out so much good on the sight; installation, email changes, navigation, user name changes…total ease of use.
  • Why the change in the first place?  Mobile Platform…(see above) IT DID NOT.
    • Still mobile users weren’t able to comment—so what was the point?
    • I used the DISQUS ‘patch’ to edit my HTML on the template…THAT DID NOT WORK.
  • When I decided to leave DISQUS—I read the FAQs again, and I knew there was a possibility I wouldn’t have your comments come back with me. I took a chance and I lost your comments from the past 2 1/2 weeks!  NOT A LIKE!
    • Oh, I have them—saved on the DISQUS site. But not on my blog.
I admit… I GOT LAZY on the EXIT.  I grew weary of trying to figure out the SYNCHING COMMENTS… evidently it’s something that needs repeating every now and again… and IT’S TIME CONSUMING. So… I removed the widget.
In the end it was just better to go back.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

“if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”  … No.  that’s not it.  (cause mine was broke…on the mobile platform)
